Exploring Chilean Patagonia in Autumn/Winter

You might be thinking that winter is the worst time of the year to visit Patagonia, either because of unattractive weather or because you think there might be fewer services and activities on offer. However, this is far from true, there are many advantages to visiting between the months of April to September, and we are here to tell you what some of them are.

Stable weather: Unlike the summer months, where the wind can reach up to 80-100 km per hour there is practically no wind in autumn and winter, with far less chance of temperature fluctuations. There is nothing worse than being disappointed by the weather. You can expect the maximum temperature at this time of the year to be around 7°C with a minimum of 3°C.

Affordable rates:
Low season means fewer visitors and many hotels and local suppliers offer special rates with discounts of up to 50% off the usual summer season prices.

Dreamlike landscapes:
The autumnal colours are a spectacle not to be missed, as the entire landscape is tinged with beautiful reds and oranges. During the winter, the snow offers a unique opportunity to observe the wildlife that during the summer months is much scarcer. Although the days are shorter, you can appreciate beautiful sunrises and sunsets during excursions.

Services and Activities:
In Torres del Paine National Park, there are currently many services that remain open throughout the year, which attract more and more curious people to enjoy the benefits of this place, including navigations such as sailing across Lake Pehoe, as well as navigation to observe the majestic Grey Glacier. For those who love hiking, it is also possible to make the classic “W”, using the services of shelters such as Paine Grande and the Torre Norte or Central shelters. For those looking for more comfort in their trip, there are hotels such as Hotel Lago Grey and Hotel Explora that remain open, offering both B&B (Hotel Lago Grey) and all-inclusive services.

There are also nice hotels in Puerto Natales open during this season, offering both accommodation and excursion services. Among them is, for example, The Singular Patagonia Hotel, with really attractive prices.

Over the last few years, the local tourism bureau, hotels, and local operators have made an effort to show the wide variety of tourist offerings in this area during the autumn and winter seasons. Little by little this effort has paid off, thanks to a rise in hotels and services open to visitors. An example of this is Sky Airlines, which will maintain its direct flight to Puerto Natales three times a week.
