Meet The Guide: Vicente from Buemes, Uruguay

Vicente Greco is no ordinary tour guide. With over two decades of experience and deep roots in Uruguay’s cultural traditions, he is both a guide and a storyteller, offering visitors a gateway to the heart of the country. As a graduate of Uruguay’s School of Work and an active member of the “Valores de Ansina” carnival group, Vicente has dedicated his career to showcasing the cultural treasures of his homeland.

The centrepiece of Vicente’s tours is Uruguay’s Carnival, the longest in the world, spanning 40 consecutive nights of celebration. More than just an event, the Carnival is an expression of Uruguay’s identity, history, and creativity. Vicente explains, “Carnival is not just a festival—it’s a space for thinking, feeling, and participating.”

For the past 11 years, Vicente has partnered with Buemes DMC to design tours that highlight this cultural phenomenon. His offerings range from small, interactive workshops to large-scale performances at iconic venues like the Solís Theatre in Montevideo. This diversity ensures that every visitor can experience Carnival in a way that resonates personally, whether they are immersing themselves in the rhythm of the candombe or marvelling at the vibrant street parades.

Uruguay’s Carnival takes place in two main settings: the tablados and the streets. The tablados, community stages, host theatrical and musical performances, often infused with social and political commentary. These shows offer visitors a glimpse into the thoughts and emotions of Uruguayans. On the streets, the renowned Desfile de Llamadas brings together over 50 groups, or comparsas, celebrating the Afro-Uruguayan heritage through the hypnotic beats of candombe, a tradition recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Vicente’s deep involvement in Carnival, both as a guide and performer, gives him a unique perspective. “It’s incredible to witness the reactions of visitors who come with no prior knowledge of this Carnival,” he shares. “They are often surprised and delighted by its inclusivity, its vibrancy, and its emotional depth.”

Adapting Carnival experiences to international audiences is one of Vicente’s strengths. By focusing on the universal languages of music and theater, he ensures that language barriers don’t detract from the experience. His workshops and performances allow visitors to actively engage with the culture, creating lasting memories of a celebration unlike any other.

Vicente Greco embodies the spirit of Uruguay. His passion for his country’s heritage, combined with his talent for storytelling and cultural exchange, makes him an invaluable ambassador for Uruguay. Through his tours, visitors don’t just see Carnival—they feel its heartbeat, leaving with a deeper appreciation for the vibrant and inclusive culture that defines Uruguay.
