Dolphins: Playful Companions of the Sea

Baja California Sur is one of the best places in the world to see dolphins in the wild. The waters off Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, and Loreto are home to numerous dolphin pods. These playful and curious mammals frequently accompany boats, leaping and diving alongside. On boat tours, your clients will have the chance to swim with or watch bottlenose, common and spinner dolphins in their natural habitat.

Manta Rays: Majestic Giants Beneath the Waves

The cold currents of the Gulf of California are home to majestic manta rays. These massive creatures, with wingspans that can reach up to seven metres, glide gracefully through the water  – a breathtaking spectacle. Particularly near Cabo Pulmo and La Paz, divers and snorkellers can witness the elegant rays as they perform underwater acrobatics. The best time to encounter manta rays is between May and September, when they are most active.

Mobula & Devil Rays: Graceful Flyers of the Sea

Another incredible marine species that can be found in the waters of Baja California Sur is the mobula ray. Often mistaken for manta rays, these graceful creatures belong to the same family but are smaller in size. Mobula rays are known for their spectacular acrobatic leaps, often seen propelling themselves out of the water in large groups, a behaviour known as “breaching.” These rays can be seen during diving or snorkelling trips off the coasts of Cabo Pulmo and La Paz, where they are frequently spotted feeding on plankton. Mobula rays are not only beautiful to watch but also offer a unique opportunity to witness their aerial displays, making them a must-see for any marine life enthusiast visiting Baja California Sur.

Humpback Whales: Acrobatics and Songs of the Sea

Between December and April each year, humpback whales migrate to the waters off Baja California Sur to mate and give birth. Cabo San Lucas and La Paz are ideal departure points for whale-watching tours. The massive whales can be seen breaching, tail-slapping, and putting on impressive displays. The songs of male humpbacks, which can be recorded through hydrophones, add a magical element to the experience.

Whale Sharks: The Gentle Giants of La Paz

Around La Paz, clients can also encounter the world’s largest fish—the whale shark. From October to May, these filter-feeding giants congregate in the shallow waters to feed on plankton. Despite their size, whale sharks are harmless to humans. Swimming alongside these gentle giants is a magical experience that attracts marine life enthusiasts from around the world.

Sea Lions at Espiritu Santo: Underwater Acrobatics

Espiritu Santo Island, located off the coast of La Paz, is home to a lively colony of California sea lions. Known for their playful nature, these marine mammals frequently interact with snorkellers and divers. Swimming with sea lions and witnessing their underwater agility is a highlight of any visit to the island. The island’s beauty, combined with the playful sea lions, makes it a must-see for wildlife lovers.

Gray Whales: Close Encounters in the Pacific Lagoons

The Pacific lagoons of Baja California Sur, particularly San Ignacio Lagoon, Ojo de Liebre, and Magdalena Bay, serve as breeding grounds for gray whales. Every winter, these gentle giants migrate from the Arctic to give birth and nurse their calves in the protected waters. Guided tours from Puerto San Carlos and Bahía de los Ángeles offer an incredible opportunity for close encounters with these magnificent whales, who often approach boats and allow visitors to touch them—an experience that is both rare and deeply moving.
