Llanos, the Colombian Plains
Visiting the Colombian plains offers an unforgettable adventure. This vast region, known as the Llanos, covers about 28% of the country and is rich in natural wonders and diverse native fauna. The lifestyle of the “llaneros” is distinct, marked by their traditional music, the joropo and their focus on livestock. In the evenings, they gather around bonfires to share myths and legends unique to this area.
Llanos – a three-night adventure
A three-night, four-day adventure in the Llanos provides an immersive experience of llanero culture. The journey begins with a direct flight from El Dorado Airport to El Alcaraván International Airport in Yopal, taking about one hour. From Yopal, a transfer to the nature reserve, located 100 km from the city, starts the adventure in the Colombian plains.
Day 1
On the first day, a specialized guide leads a hike along ecological trails to explore the surroundings of a traditional llanero hacienda, or “hato,” in the Llanos. In the afternoon, a llanero safari on horseback, lasting approximately three hours, offers the chance to spot a variety of birds and wildlife.
Day 2
The second day begins at dawn with a sunrise view and cow milking, followed by a typical breakfast. The adventure continues with a canoe trip for artisanal fishing with hook and line. In the afternoon, a 4×4 llanero safari explores the reserve’s herds, providing sightings of anteaters, woodpeckers, foxes and numerous birds. In the evening, myths, tales, and legends are shared around a campfire, enriching the adventure in the heart of the Colombian plains.
Day 3
The third day starts with breakfast and a handicraft workshop where participants learn to collect and weave horse mane to create ties or ropes. After lunch, a horseback ride across the plains to “Las Queseras,” where the three farms that make up the reserve meet, enhances the adventure.
Day 4
On the final day, breakfast is followed by more time spent with the herd before moving on to the next destination. The horseback rides traverse savannas, lakes, marshes, and forests, providing opportunities to observe wildlife. The region is home to over 340 species of birds registered in Ebird and animals such as felines, anacondas, foxes, and howler monkeys live in the wild, making it ideal for wildlife enthusiasts.
The Colombian plains are one of Colombia’s most remarkable hidden gems. This region offers unique cultural experiences, abundant wildlife, and stunning landscapes. Exploring the Llanos is a chance to embark on an adventure in a vibrant and lesser-known part of Colombia.
