Born in 1948, Lorenzo Sympson is one of the world’s most knowledgeable field experts on the Andean condor. An Argentine of Scottish and English immigrant grandparents, he was born into a middle-class ranching family that spoke English at their home on the Argentinian pampas.

Lifelong Commitment to Conservation
Lorenzo has dedicated his life to birds and conservation. A veterinarian and former administrator of Nahuel Huapi National Park, he began studying the Andean condor and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle in 1989, a project that continues today.

Leadership and Regional Impact
Co-founder of the Naturalist Andean Patagonian Society, Lorenzo has guided leading ornithologists, photographers, and documentary filmmakers across Northern Patagonia. His deep knowledge of raptors and their habitats—especially in the Lake District—has made him an essential figure in regional conservation.

Birdwatching At Its Best
He has also created birdwatching routes from the Pacific to Peninsula Valdés, one of his favourite places, blending science, storytelling, and a love for wild Patagonia. Lorenzo lives outside Bariloche with his family and continues his research on raptors with international collaborators.
