Mexico DMC:

Native Trails

Our mission: To inspire excitement about Mexico and provide experiences that support operators and travellers, while celebrating Mexico’s cultural heritage.

About our Mexico partner

It all began in 1994 with a “Wild Tarantula Tour,” when Olaf invited his best friends from Germany to explore the Southwest of the USA and Mexico’s Copper Canyons.

It became clear during this trip that Mexico had so much to offer. Olaf spent time planning this version of a Mexico-focused travel business and it was launched at ITB (International Tourism Bourse) in Berlin. The first ever group tour was two years later, to Baja California and the Copper Canyons. Native Trails continues to grow and develop ever more exciting itineraries to Mexico.

In 2008, Native Trails headquarters were founded in Germany. There are now teams in Germany, France & Mexico, with Birgit Grund as Managing Director in Mexico City. Birgit is energetic, well trained, highly motivated and focused on Mexico, a country with big soul and countless characteristics. These include its cultural diversity and pre Columbian civilisations; of the Copper Canyons, and the Baja California with its changing landscape between desert and sea.

Native Trails want our customers to experience this fascinating world. Besides the responsibility towards the Mexican people, this includes ecologically sensitive tourism that pays particular attention to preserving Mexico’s unique civilisations. This is their approach when creating travel programmes that truly portray the essence of Mexico.

Native Trails’ loyal client base in Europe, the US and Mexico is a testament to how hard the team have worked to provide excellent service. This is something they take great pride in, forging new relationships and introducing the best Mexico has to offer through their ethos of providing quality service to clients.

Mexico

Mexico is a fascinating country. Famous for its stunning beaches it is also rich with diverse landscapes, pre-Columbian archaeological sites, colonial towns and ancient traditions. Stretching from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea to the Pacific, the interior takes travellers across cactus-strewn deserts and through lush rainforests, to canyons, plateaus, mountains and snow-capped volcanoes – While crystal clear coastal waters offer great diving, snorkelling and whale-watching opportunities.

For those interested in history Mexico has over 11,000 archaeological sites, including ruins from Maya, Aztec, Olmec and Toltec cultures; and fascinating museums to discover. Beautiful bustling towns from the colonial era offer lively markets, shady plazas to relax in, and magnificent churches and mansions to explore. Fascinating food, art and music, all important elements of both historic and the more contemporary Mexican culture, can also be enjoyed throughout the country. Mexico’s friendly and hospitable people also reflects the history of the country and includes communities of direct descendants from pre-Columbian cultures.

Mexico truly has something to offer everyone and is just waiting to be explored!

Olaf Bock von Gersum

FOUNDER

Hi, I’m Olaf – born and raised in Europe. In my early twenties, I was a student at the University of El Paso along the Rio Grande River and sure enough fell in love with the desert and mountains of Chihuahua, its people and cultures. Even before finishing my studies as a political science major, I founded Native Trails to offer tours to Mexico’s Copper Canyons.

Thereafter it soon became clear that Mexico has so much to offer – for me it is a multi-faceted country with great soul; it represents cultural diversity at its best, with pre-Columbian civilisations and landscapes that take your breath away whether it’s the endless deserts or the luxurious jungle regions in Chiapas and Yucatán… not to forget the colonial cities or the never-ending beaches!

Every year, I am lucky to spend several months as a Native Trails scout in Mexico, checking our existing services and finding new hotels, restaurants and fascinating experiences – e.g., the Chili farmers of Dzemul or hiking trails within the spectacular jungle region of the Lacandons. However, most of the year I am in the office sitting alongside our product and marketing team. All our itineraries are customised and “handcrafted” to the needs of you, our clients.
