Iguazu is one of the iconic destinations of Argentina, but over and above the imposing spectacle of the falls, the surrounding Atlantic jungle offers nature lovers, avid birdwatchers, photographers and those who wish to disconnect, a hidden gem: La Lorenza.
A small refuge hidden amid the jungle, here you can walk hidden trails, visit a typical local house to learn from the indigenous farmer about yerba mate and native medicinal herbs, enjoy drinks and a cheese platter on a private deck overlooking the Parana River, take a motorboat ride to the hidden Yasi Cascade for a swim in the natural rock pool at its foot, or kayak the tributaries of the Urugua-I river.
The Patagonian Glaciers are a must, particularly the imposing Perito Moreno Glacier. If you are searching for a unique perspective, this hidden gem is for you: a special full day of natural beauty, history, and culture, for just 15 people. Visit Estancia Nibepo Aike, a working sheep and cattle ranch to witness a hands-on sheep shearing demonstration and hear tales of ancient settlers. Lunch on grilled Patagonian lamb before embarking on a boat ride along the lake to Las Monedas beach. A delightful forest walk leads to a panoramic view of Perito Moreno Glacier. Thirty kilometres long, this imposing ice wall towers 70 meters above the lake. Navigate close along its southern face before disembarking for the traditional walkway circuit, arriving once the regular crowds have already left so that you can enjoy the sights comfortably. One of the most interesting and adventurous ways of experiencing the glacier is a two-hour trek over the glacier itself, requiring special crampons on your shoes. It is a unique experience to see natural variations such as crevasses, seracs and small pools, ending with sharing a drink cooled by millennial ice.
Estancia Los Potreros in Cordoba. A two-hour flight from Buenos Aires, high in the Cordoba hills, this working cattle ranch has it all: luxury, privacy, gourmet food, twice-daily horse-back rides, and the chance to watch the gauchos at work, try your hand at lassoing, or assist with the herding. A hidden gem well worth taking extra time for.
The vast Pampas plains (where those succulent steaks come from) are a short drive from Buenos Aires. In the historic town of San Antonio de Areco, deeply rooted in gaucho culture, lies a hidden treasure – the traditional Estancia La Bamba de Areco. Try horseback or carriage rides, indulge in an authentic Argentine asado cooked over wood embers, and witness impressive gaucho skills such as horse herding, cattle lassoing, and traditional mounted games. Immerse yourself in the gaucho’s songs and dances accompanied by guitar and bombo drum. Visit Areco’s Gaucho Museum, Molina Campos art collection depicting rural life, and silversmith Juan José Draghi’s Museum showcasing gaucho items adorned with silver and antique coins, as were the accoutrements of their horses. Contemporary and unique jewellery designed by his son Patricio adds a touch of modern flair.
