One of the most remarkable things about Ecuador is how quickly the landscape changes. From Quito, it takes less than two hours to reach environments that feel worlds apart, cloud forests to the west, volcanic highlands and thermal springs to the east. Two Cloud Forests, One City
To the west of Quito sits Mindo, a dense, humid cloud forest known for its extraordinary bird diversity and lush vegetation. To the east, the road climbs over the Andes and descends into a different kind of cloud forest, shaped by the Amazon influence and the volcanic activity of the surrounding peaks. The two areas share the same city as a starting point but feel genuinely different in character, in climate, and in the species they support.
That difference is most visible in the birds. The Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, one of Ecuador’s most striking species, has two distinct subspecies on either side of the Andes. The western bird carries a deep red plumage, while the one found to the east is a vivid orange. Same species, same distance from Quito, two completely different encounters. And that is just one example of what this contrast produces.
Volcanoes, Thermals, and What Lies Between
To the east of Quito, the volcanic landscape shapes everything around it. The Antisana and Cayambe-Coca ecological reserves protect some of the most pristine high-altitude territory in the country, home to the Andean Condor, the Spectacled Bear, and a range of páramo wildlife that few visitors expect to find so close to a capital city. The same volcanic activity also heats the thermal springs of Papallacta, where travellers can end a day in the highlands with a long soak in mineral-rich pools surrounded by mountain scenery.
